Introduction


The idea of allowing postcards with pictures apparently did not all of a sudden appear. As early as 1888, a set of "trial" postcards was submitted and approved by the censors, although they never went into production. There does appear to be general agreement that the "first" proposed set was approved for use by the censors in 1895. Tagrin says there were six items. According to Bartmann, there were at least two sets of at least six items in each set. The difference in the sets was that one was in Russian only and the other was in Russian and French. His illustrations are listed by followuing the link below. Note that he does not list all the items.
