Octagon postmark

cec71 - 4/17/2018 at 12:57

Scanned is an blue octagon postmark.

Prigara in his post text on page 123 describes octagonal mail car postmarks being used circa 1898-1901. A photo is shown in table XII of the book.

The stamp on which this postmark resides is Scott 12, circa 1865.

Any information on an earlier usage???

In 1885, all earlier stamps were to be removed from circulation, after the issue of the new designs in 1883. It seems doubtful that this stamp would have been used in 1898, though some of those octagonal cancels on TPOs 133-150 were used a bit earlier. Its a little hard to see, but I think the spelling here is "Pochtovoe...", which would be followed by "Otd...", not "Vagon". Marks of this sort were used by TPO 3 Otd through 6 Otd, starting in the early 1880s. Too bad the number is not visible.
