Disinfection at Gaudan
A Persian postcard sent by the customs director in Meshed via Gaudan to Paris. Gaudan straddled the Russo-Persian border with post offices on both
sides. Steam disinfection was instituted in 1897 for protection against plague. Postmarks are (1) Meched dated 18 Sept. 1904 (new style), (2) Gaoudan
[on reverse] dated 22 Sept. (new Style), (3) Gaudan Zakaspiisk. Ob. dated 10 Sept., (4) Obezzarazheno. (43mm), applied at Gaudan.

Looks like they dragged this Mark out a few times then...
Here's a registered cover ex Meshed to Paris (again) 1906 via Russia somewhere (Maslowski guessed it was Dzhulfa). But the letter shows signs of being
opened and resealed with the disinfection mark in the top left rear. Hmmm and is that a Russian registration mark I see on the front (nominally
re-registered).... ???

Odd that there is no Russian town postmark. Coming from Meshed one would expect to see a Gaudan postmark. I cannot identify the Persian mark on front
(Hou...). The R in circle is certainly Russian.

Now that I think of it, maybe the Persian mark on front was applied in Persian Gaudan, using an alternate spelling Houdan?? In which case the
disinfection mark was applied in Russian Gaudan, not in Dzhulfa, which was nowhere near Meshed.

Sounds right to me... I guess the Dzulfa was only a guess on Maslowski's write up (a lot of stuff did go through there). The Gaudan seems more (or
Houdan - Persian) logical and ties in with the other item.
