Soviet rates (my notes)

I promised to publish my notes (based on my own collection) regarding Soviet rates. For what they may be worth since they are bound to be enormously incomplete. In any case this post will provide a focal point for further discussion, elaboration, correction, etc. The dates (European style) correspond to items in my collection. I added these to start determining periods of usage range in a more or less *cough* empirical way.

Unfortunately I do not have the time or energy right now to do this more "academically" and worthy of a Rossica member :-) Ideally we should create one uniform format covering all periods for easy reference, which can be corrected or broadened by all who are interested. In my list I have oddly opted for putting rates first. For me this is an easy and quick way to determine if rates on covers correspond with the intended use of those covers. If I have more time I will update them here progressively, since these notes are four years old and I have acquired new material in the meantime.

And here are the Michel tables for postal stationery covering the same post-revolutionary and pre-1991 period.

Postkarte = postcards
Fernverkehr = mail abroad
Ortsverkehr = domestic mail
Bildpostkarte = illustrated postcards
Luftpost = airmail
Briefe = letters
Einschreiben = registered mail
landpost = surface mail
luftpost = airmail

Workshop commenting

Here is an idea. Is it technically possible, or desirable, to have "workshop posts"? For instance. One member posts a comment on a certain topic that will subsequently be accessible to several other people for updates and editing.

In the case of dates, for instance, we would be able to easily record earliest and latest usage for postal rates based on what we collectively have in our collections.

This way we can work together, whenever we find some time, on a common, "live " project. It saves the trouble of later having to combine multiple posts on the same subject.

Any comments on this?

Very useful. Thanks for the great information.

I don't think "workshop posts" are available on a board. The person that posts can always update (edit) the post as others contribute information.

I think I will gather the post-revolutionary rates I have and put them in the format I did for the 1990s.

It will take me some time but I hope it will be useful.

I just had a look at your list, thanks for putting them up. Though I am afraid combining all our data so far will turn out to be a rather messy business :-)

But is great to have all that material available. It should become a good basis to compare with the official publications.

Not everyone has access to the official publications.

Some of the rates like printed matter, business papers, insured mail, etc. are not readily available.

The printed rates were not always followed because of the confusion after the Revolution and the Civil War.

I just hope listing the rates in one place, the Samovar, will be useful and maybe spark some interest.
