early use of 1858 10k Wide Perf

The third 10k stamp issued, in fall 1858 is the wide perf (12.5).
It is variously listed in catalogs has having been issued in September or October 1858. Finding one used before 1859, however, is a different matter. Here is an example used 20/9/1858
on a letter from St Petersburg to Reval, with an appropriate receiver on the back. It is rather a pity that the stamp was cut (looks like it was torn over an edge) and the cancel so poor. It is, I think, an orthodox circular dot-numeral "1". Still, this has to be one of the earliest examples.

First Recorded Date of Usage

A quite exceptional item indeed.

The first date of usage recorded is a cover from the 19th September 1858 from St Petersburg to Saratov, only one day before the previous cover illustrated above. I have never seen an earlier usage.

I thought the second date recorded to be the 8th of October, on a cover from St Petersburg to Helsingfors. But you beat that date :)

It seems that the early usages only come from St Petersburg PO. Anyway, they are indeed very, very rare.

Any earlier date? :)

Maxime

Thanks David.

I certainly agree with you that the 10kop. perf. 12,5 is more difficult to find used in 1858.

Nevertheless, if we take into account that this stamp was primarly designed for the 1 lot covers (the most common) and that there is one Russia imperf. 10kop. (Scott 1) on cover for almost each day of use in 1858 (as a comparison), I tend to think that the 10kop. perf. 12,5 should be found much more easily on November & December 1858 covers.

Regarding October 1858, it seems nevertheless much, much much scarcer.

Best regards,

Maxime

There is a second letter with date from 19th September 1858 sent from St.Petersburg to Libau. Also I know a letter from 28th September sent from St.Petersburg too. The letters from 19th and 20th September are canceled by a circular dot "1" with dots at right and left near the "1". The letter from 28th September (sorry - no scan) is canceled by the type without dots near the "1".
