1058 roubles franking from 1923

I just purchased this russian registered cover from 17/X/1923 and would be interested in knowing what is the rate applied on the cover with a franking of 1058 roubles.(there is an 18 blue written on the front, is that for 18x the rate?)

This is one of those "conversion table" problems. Starting on 16 October 1923, postal rates were set in gold currency which was converted to 1923 rubles at a rate which was adjusted daily.
The gold kopek postal rates were 20k per 15 grams, plus 20k for registration. If I recall correctly, the conversion rate was on the order of 1 gold ruble = 500 rubles of 1923, so 20 gold kopeks would be about 100 rubles of 1923. Someone with access to a conversion table will do better

So my best guess? 9-fold weight (it's a big envelope!) costing 9x20 gold kopeks = 1.80 gold rubles, plus 20 gold kopeks for registration makes 2 gold rubles exactly. Using a conversion rate of 529, that gets you to 1058 rubles of 1923.

I'm not sure what the "18" on the front means, sorry!

I couldn't find a table in anything I had available either, sorry! A great person to ask would be Randy Woodward - our Rossica bulletin editor - who really likes these October-November 1923 math problems. His email address is:

Here is a table of the ruble exchange rates for late 1923 (from the POCHTA journal #26):
