I don't see a good reason for the due, and there is no indication that the Russian side thought there was a problem. It is interesting that the NY PO cancelled the stamp. This could be because of the relatively light cancel. If they thought that the stamp was fake or re-used, they normally would have circled it or put X's around it, not cancelled it. So that doesn't really explain the postage due. Perhaps the clerk was unfamiliar with Russian stamps because he/she had never seen one before?? Finally, the card seems to be sent to the famous Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, so is interesting for that as well.

The US clerk mistakenly thought that the post card should have been franked at the 10 kopeck letter rate, in which case there was a deficiency of 6 kopecks which gets doubled to 12 kopecks, which equals 6 cents.
