Other Russia-abroad stamps

Anybody knows anything about these stamps? Any publications, collections, handbooks? Other than in major catalogs?

"Russian Occupation of Crete"

After the independence of Greece was recognized in 1832, the new state was confined to the southern part of mainland and a few Aegean Islands. Much of the rest of modern day Greece reamined under the control of Ottoman Turkey or other powers.

This included the island of Crete, which after various revolts and Greco-Turkish wars achieved autonomy, but not union with the Greek Kingdom in 1897 (It wasn't united with Greece until 1913). In 1899 (I believe) Crete was occupied by the combined European "powers" to maintain order and also protect the loans owed to them by Crete, Greece and Turkey.

The powers -- Russia, Britain, France and Austria -- all established post offices on Crete and used special or overprinted stamps. Your examples are from the Russian occupation, which had its headquarters in Rethymnon in Central Crete (hence the overprint).

You can find information on these Russian issues in Greek stamp catalogs and specialized publications. There have also been articles in Rossica and The Postrider (I believe), but I don't have the references handy.

A word of caution: forgeries of the Cretan occuption issues of Russia and Britain are very common!

Thanks to all.

If anybody knows or remembers anything else I'd appreciate a short email message or posting here.
