small letters - visit cards

Greeting cards were sent for many occasions in the empire era as well as letters also wishing the recipients a happy this or happy that. These cards are a separate topic and rather plentiful to the interested collector.

During the same period of time, people would visit other people for various reasons. A visit card would be left to indicate that the person had been there, even if the person to whom they came to see was not there. When sent via the mail, they are mainly observed on intra-city mail, but they also can be noted sent to addresses in another city. The visit cards were rather plentiful at the time, but apparently were thrown away as if junk mail.

They are not easy to find, but that does not mean they are scarce or rare. Finding the small envelopes in which they were mailed offers a better opportunity for the collector than the cards themselves. For the postmark collector of city or town mail, these intra-city letters can produce some postmarks that are otherwise scarce to find.

Illustrated here is a "visit card" type letter from St. Petersburg to Yalta. Inside the envelope, the card contains Easter Greetings and the name of the sender. Why the sender did not use a greeting card is unknown since they were plentiful at the time.

The envelope is small at approximately 3.5 x 2 inches and is franked with a pair of 1-kop. stamps, Scott #73. Since the letter was too small to have both the address and the stamps on the front, the stamps were applied to the rear of the envelope. A Yalta arrival mark is also noted on the reverse.

Illustrated are the front, back, and card from inside.

More examples of these would be wonderful. Can anyone add to this topic?
