Not about mustard

The German word for mustard is senf. Illustrated here is a letter to the Brothers Senf in Leipzig. However, they are not about mustard.

More information???

The Senf brothers (Louis, 1852-1940 and Richard, 1856-1941) were prominent in European philately 100 years ago. They were pioneer stamp dealers and publishers, contemporaries of Moens in Belgium and Stanley Gibbons in England. Old-time collections housed in "Senf" albums still turn up at auctions, and older German philatelists have fond memories of the firm.

Thanks Angara! We have now seen correspodence in the Samovar for Moens and Senf Brothers. Can someone complete the cycle and show something to Stanley Gibbons? Maybe other items of philatelic interest as well?

I don't have anything Russian sent to Stanley Gibbons, but I do have this 1876 postal card sent from Odessa by the famous Russian collector Friedrich Breitfuss (1851-1911). The card, written in Breitfuss' usual neat handwriting, is addressed to Dr C.W. Viner in London. In 1869 Charles Viner (1814-1906) had been a founder member of the Royal Philatelic Society, London, after which, as suggested by the inscription on the card, he was editor of "The Philatelist". In fact, Breitfuss eventually sold most of his collection to Stanley Gibbons Ltd. This was in 1907, by which time Charles Phillips had purchased the Gibbons firm. Phillips travelled to St Petersburg and spent 10 days viewing the material, after which he paid over 30,000 pounds (equivalent to about two million pounds today) for Breitfuss' Russia, Finland and Zemstvo material. As the collection was, unusually, not sold by auction, much "ex-Breitfuss" material is difficult to identify. Does anyone have anything ex-Breitfuss?
