In 1960, two of the original Single Position Letter Sorting Machines (SPLSM) were purchased from Thrissell Engineering Co. Ltd. by the Soviet authorities. In 1970, twp SPLSMs of a later type were purchased from Masson Scott Thrissell, the successor company. The cover shown was used during the tests and has been through the machines a number of times. It has a red captial "R" ident on the back.
